Mental health is just as important as physical health – we often fail to realize the impact negative thoughts have on our attitudes, work performances, and relationships. Combating negative thoughts isn’t easy, but it’s essential for a healthy lifestyle. In order to recognize the power of positivity, we must consciously take steps to increase the flow of positive thoughts.

Being consistently aware of your thoughts doesn’t come naturally, it takes practice and dedication. Here are a few tips to get you started.

1) Reconstruct negative thoughts

Combat negative thoughts by being constructive. Attack the issue from a new angle – instead of looking at the unfavorable aspect of a situation, focus on how you can turn it around. You can’t always change the negative, so choose to focus on moving forward.   

2) Smile more!

Smiling is proven to produce happier thoughts. Check out this blog on the benefits of smiling. 

3) Recognize the importance of reflection

Take time every day, or at least once a week, to acknowledge and reflect on positive experiences. Putting an emphasis on positive moments will improve your mood and productivity.

4) Visualize positive outcomes

Starting a new project at work? Training for a marathon? Start by creating a mental picture of success. Plan out the steps to succeed, and visualize yourself completing the goal; keep this picture in your mind along the way.  

5) Do things that make you happy

Schedule time to do something you love, not because you have to, but because it makes you happy. Giving yourself a mental break from the stresses of your life opens the gateway for positive, constructive thinking.

6) Get active

Your body impacts your ability to think positively. Do you sit at a desk at work all day? Make an effort to periodically take walks. This increases blood flow and clears your head. If you have time, take a quick jog at the end of the day. Physical activity releases positive endorphins and improves your mood.  


Don’t expect yourself to be perfect! Your mindset will not change overnight, but integrating these habits into your lifestyle will produce impactful outcomes in the long run. Others will take notice, as your positive mentality will reflect in every aspect of your life.
