Oh yes, with the first week of Redskins OTAs in the books we can finally start to smell not only a new season around the corner but the air of change.
OTAs, or Official Team Activities, are a crucial time for both coaches and players to benchmark all of their progress, plays, defensive calls and more. For the Washington Redskins, this is especially important with so many new men at the helm.
New GM Scot McCloughan is working especially hard to build one of the best and most physical teams in the NFL alongside the now, two-year head coach, Jay Gruden.
“We’re going full speed but stay off the ground,” Gruden commented during a press conference this week. There is no contact allowed during practices. While no contact may sound foolish, it’s a time where players and coaches can focus on technique.
So what’re we working with?
OFFENSE: Boy, did our linemen get bigger in the off-season! The Skins selected three offensive linemen in the draft alone -- All in hopes to aid the newer and much more powerful offense. Also in that draft, came running back Matt Jones out of the University of Florida. He’s a heavy-hitting and speedy athlete which will enhance the Redskins running game next to that of Alfred Morris.
Mike Jones from the Washington Post spoke with Morris who commented on how excited he was for the upcoming season despite any of the new offensive changes.
“I don’t shy away from contact.”
While no contact is being made just yet, RG3 is still practicing with just as much ferocity and quickness. “Robert's got great work ethic, number one. That’s never been a question” Gruden stated following the first day of OTA. RG3 and Gruden are now entering their second year together and looking to strengthen their bond even more over these following weeks.
As for Kirk Cousins and Colt McCoy, they have been splitting reps evenly behind first-team’s RG3.
DEFENSE: We can finally dry our tears after the retirement of safety Ryan Clark! New defensive coordinator, Joe Barry, has racked up quite some depth at the safety position by acquiring 2x Pro-Bowler Dashon Goldson, Jeron Johnson and Duke Ihenacho.
Johnson and Ihenacho have become standouts this past week and will prove to drive competition at the position. Ihenacho is actually so fast that he had to design his own cleats…

Also standing out is linebacker Trevardo Williams who has been filling in for the injured Ryan Kerrigan. Kerrigan underwent knee scope surgery on May 19th. Williams may prove to be a big underdog in Barry’s new system as he’s use to the role in a 3-4 coming from Houston.
The team is optimistic and looking to implement a new culture.
