The Washington Redskins are now 2-0 in the preseason, as they got past the Cleveland Browns 24-23 at FedExField Monday night.
Just as they did vs. the New England Patriots in Week 1, the Redskins’ first-team defense did not allow a first down in the first quarter. In fact, led by Ryan Kerrigan (two sacks), the defense forced five straight three-and-outs to start the game.
Offensively, the first-team unit received extended action in comparison to Week 1, playing the entire first quarter and the first few minutes of the second quarter. Robert Griffin III got it going early, completing passes to tight end Jordan Reed (five yards) and wide receiver DeSean Jackson (23 yards) on the first drive of the game. For Jackson, it was his first catch as a Redskin.
In total, Griffin III connected on eight of his 12 pass attempts for 112 yards – 49 of which came on a deep bomb to wide receiver Andre Roberts in-between two Browns defensive backs.
Late in the second quarter, veteran running back Evan Royster showcased his versatility, catching a ball out of the backfield for a 24-yard gain. On the next play, he punched the pigskin through the end zone for a two-yard touchdown.
In the second half, quarterback Kirk Cousins found rookie wide receiver Ryan Grant on a perfectly thrown ball in the corner of the end zone. This came after Grant disconnected from coverage rather easily.
In the fourth quarter, quarterback Colt McCoy drove the Redskins down to the Browns’ 30-yard line, where he would find second-year wide receiver Nick Williams for a touchdown. Rookie kicker Zach Hocker put the Redskins up for good after nailing the extra point attempt.
The Redskins travel to Baltimore Saturday to take on the Ravens. Following that game, their next, and final, preseason game will come against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Aug. 28.
It's our turn.
