13 Delicious Gluten-Free Snack and Appetizers for Your Next Football or Tailgate Party

It’s no secret that gluten is increasingly becoming the bad guy in many American diets.  In 2012, Time Magazine listed gluten-free foods as one of the top 10 food trends of 2012.  Whether you’re living a gluten-free lifestyle due to celiac disease, gluten or wheat intolerance, GF foods are in high demand.  

The gluten-free food industry is estimated to grow from 4.2 billion in 2012 to 6.6 billion in 2017.   But for consumers, whether you’re buying in bulk or small quantities, purchasing pre-made gluten-free foods can be expensive.  So to stimulate your taste buds, while giving your pocketbook a rest, I’ve listed some of my favorite healthy GF foods that will deliciously satisfy your party guests.

Deviled Eggs are a classic appetizer.  But, if you want to jazz it up, add crab, diced red bell peppers or caramelized onions to your egg yolk mixture.

Granola is an excellent snack that presents well next to the pretzel bowl.  When purchasing oats, be sure to select the GF variety.  My favorite DIY granola recipe is Giraffe Granola.

Roasted Vegetables bring out the natural sugar and juices in veggies that can be eaten alone, mixed with GF pasta or with a bean salad.

Buffalo Bites are healthier version of traditional Buffalo wings that just happen to be gluten-free.  You can find the recipe here.

Home Baked Bread is a must for any gluten free party.  Whether you’re new to baking gluten-free treats or an expert, it’s a must.  My favorite is GF Banana Bread.

Strawberry Spinach Salad is easy to prepare and is a healthy treat that everyone will enjoy.  To prepare it, mix fresh baby spinach with sliced almonds, cranberries, sunflower seeds, strawberries and feta cheese.  Then top with your favorite vinaigrette.

Guacamole is a popular dip eaten at many parties.  Surprisingly it’s also gluten-free.  Although often paired with chips, it can also be used as a spread on tortilla wraps.

Baked Pears stuffed with oatmeal and raisins and baked until golden brown is a healthy desert that gives your hips a kiss of health.  Check out this video on how to make my Healthy Spiced Pear Dessert.

Cucumber Mango Boats are fun, colorful and easy to make.  If mangos aren’t in season, just substitute them for pineapple.  You can find the recipe here.

Chili is warm, satisfying and surprisingly gluten free.  Although most recipes consist of beans, tomatoes, meat and spices, you can bump up the health factor by adding corn or diced spinach.

Fajitas are a versatile food that satisfies even the pickiest of eaters.   Bring culinary fun to your party and set up a fajita bar.  Use a combination of protein features like chicken, tofu and shrimp and let your guests make their own.  Be sure to have corn tortillas available to satisfy GF diets.

Fruit Salads are one of the most popular healthy dishes served at parties.  Good thing they are packed full of some of nature’s healthiest foods on the planet.

Crab Cakes represent the DMV culture and can be easily modified to fit the gluten-free lifestyle.  For example, if your filler of preference is crackers, swap the regular variety for a gluten-free brand.
