Saturday afternoon at Redskin Park was taken over by a bunch of NFL Ninjas, and leading the pack was Nike Elite Trainer Ary Nunez.
She challenged us with a complete body workout that mixed martial arts with NFL moves. She comes with some awesome cred like personal trainer to Rihanna and Alicia Keys. She is so spunky and her energy was contagious. I found myself smiling the whole time. Even when she had us standing on our heads! Well, almost standing on my head, but I came home with some of the artificial turf stuck in my hair!
The workout started with a warm up of stretches. (Note to self: I need to stretch more.)Followed by push ups and mountain climbers back to back. I love my push ups but these were slow and tough.
Then we were lead around the indoor facility by our inspiring founder of WOW and wife of Redskins owner Daniel M. Snyder, Mrs. Tanya Snyder. That girl can run! First we ran, and then we did walking lunges. We still weren’t around the field yet so we kicked our way down another 50 yards and ended with a backwards run. Even though Ary kept saying “Look over your right shoulder," I came close to several collisions with my workout buddies!
So that was just the warm up!! Let the workout begin!!
Ary put us through lots of different moves. Some I recognized as elements of Capoeira. Capoeira is a Brazilian style of martial arts that combines quick moves using mainly power, speed and leverage.
We kicked, lunged and jumped our way into a good sweat.
Ary made a point of showing us ways to physically defend ourselves if we needed to. It felt very empowering. But she showed us with humor. I think I pulled my hamstring with the hitch kick! (Again, note to self: stretch!).
Before we began, I was standing next to what looked like a mother and daughter. The mom looked a little nervous. She said she doesn’t exercise that much. I told her it was going to be fun and do what she could. She said she thought this may get her to workout more and try new things. I kept my eye on her through the workout. She was amazing. Smiling and laughing with her daughter. And having a good time. That’s what this event was all about…fun, friendship and challenges.
The workout ended too soon but I am sure we got our heart rate up and our muscles worked.
Mrs. Snyder said something that resonated with me on the ride home. We need to take care of ourselves. That can include our body, our mind AND our soul. So WOWers, take care of you, take care of the ones around you and take care and nurture your soul to be the best you!
