The Washington Redskins opened their 2012 season with a bang Sunday, as they went into New Orleans and defeated the hometown Saints 40-32 in front of a loud crowd at the Superdome.

There were several keys to Sunday's victory, but we'll focus on the obvious: Redskins rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III played marvelously in his first-ever NFL game.

Griffin III started the game on fire through the Redskins' first two series on offense, completing his first seven passes for 123 yards and a touchdown. His favorite target early was wide receiver Pierre Garçon, who, on one key play, was found across the middle of the field by Griffin III and won a foot race to the end zone for an 88-yard score. The play gave the Redskins a 10-7 lead that they wouldn't relinquish.

The Redskins' key play of the game, however, came on defense.

With the Redskins leading 20-7 and the second quarter coming to a close, Saints quarterback Drew Brees took over and began to charge his offense down the field, trying to get a last-minute touchdown to give his team the momentum going into halftime.

On a crucial play, Brees found one of his favorite targets, wide receiver Marques Colston, who took the ball all the way to the 3-yard line. Colston appeared that he was going to score the touchdown -- but Redskins cornerback Cedric Griffin had other plans.

Griffin stripped the ball from Colston, who fumbled. The ball then rolled all the way out of the back of the end zone, which meant the refs called a touchback, and the Redskins were given the ball back. The team had officially held off the Saints' first-half rally.

Had Colston or any of his teammates been able to dive on that loose ball before it rolled out of the end zone, the Saints would've scored a touchdown and only would've trailed 20-14 at that point.

So, in short, the play of Griffin III and the Redskins' defense has given fans lots to be excited about heading into the team's Week 2 matchup again the St. Louis Rams.

Though lots of work and improvement is underway, the Redskins gave their fans plenty of reasons to celebrate this week.

Enjoy the victory!
