Lorenzo Alexander has a lot going on besides football. Father and husband, founder and president of the ACES Foundation focused on under-served youth, founder and part-owner of a local Pilates and fitness studio. The list goes on, and we didn't include his spot as one of the Redskins Team Captains last year.
When WOW asked the linebacker how he manages it all, he replied, "I wouldn't be able to do it...without my wife. She is definitely my rock...without her I'd be lost."
As the team's female fan club, WOW had to sit down with Manjanique, Lorenzo's wife, to find out how SHE manages it all. Almost five years of marriage and three children later, Manjanique tell us about life with Lorenzo, staying fit, running a business and even shows us her silly side...
Does your family have any gameday rituals or superstitions?
We don’t have any superstitions but Lorenzo does always call me on his way to the game. For whatever reason, it’s always nice to say “good luck” and “I love you” right before he plays. I think it helps calm his nerves and I feel better knowing he knows I’m watching and supporting him.
The last couple of years I have realized that I would prefer to be comfortable while at the game, so I usually wear sneakers and one of my #97 jerseys! We also have a pre-packed game day bag ready to go for gameday. It includes flags for the car, all my Redskins costume jewelry, a Redskins Snuggie, special toys for gamedays only & binoculars!
Favorite gameday memory?
For me it was the 10 year anniversary of 9/11 at FedExField when we played (and beat the New York Giants). It was awesome to watch Lorenzo walk on the field as the team captain with Colin Powell for the coin toss. I also loved when all of the service members, their families and players all held the flag on the field: America’s team honoring all of the heroes from that day in our history.
But every game that I get to watch is awesome! I have so much pride knowing that he absolutely gives 100% each and every time he's on the field.
Do you like to cook?
I love to cook, although I don’t get to as often as I’d like because of my busy schedule. I grew up on Mexican food and my Grandmother’s home cooking, so most of the time that is what I cook for our family. Lorenzo loves my green enchiladas and “mormon” potatoes.
Lorenzo is very involved in the community and runs the ACES Foundation, committed to underserved youth. How involved are you with ACES and the community yourself?
My husband has a true heart to serve! With that being said, I am very involved in ACES. I didn’t realize how much was involved with running our own foundation, but thankfully the whole family is involved. My mother-in-law and Aunt run the Oakland Chapter, while Lorenzo and I along with many volunteers run DC. My favorite cause is ACES of course :) While we may be small in scale, I have seen the large impact it has had on individuals, families, as well as communities. I have also seen the way young men look up to my husband and see what he is doing in the community and say “I want to give back too”. That is priceless! My favorite ACES event that I organize is our “Big Play Back to School Giveaway," where we take 50-60 local kids to Target to get their school supplies and clothing. We receive letters from many single moms genuinely thanking us for this opportunity, as they were prepared to have to send their kids to school without any new clothes or the supplies they need. You and Lorenzo own a Pilates studio with the Redskins defensive end Kedric Golston and his wife, Crystal – what is it like to run your own business?
I started doing Pilates with Lorenzo a couple of years back as a "day date" with my husband. I fell in love with the instructors and also the many benefits my body and mind was reaping from the practice. I recently became certified to teach as well. We bought an existing studio with the Golstons and are growing the business to not only include Pilates, but also Dance, TRX, and a children's program for mommies morning out, afterschool care, and pre-school. We are excited to be offering a free mat pilates class in the Redskins bubble on June 30th for all WOW members! More information on the studio can be found at thestudiombs.com or our Facebook page!
I'm not going to lie, it can be difficult running your own business! It is very time consuming, especially with three kids and another job and a lot of times, I am overwhelmed just like almost any other mom! I put way too much pressure on myself and have a never ending "to do" list. I like to relieve stress by taking a Pilates class at the studio, chatting with my favorite friends, and through prayer!
I know that hard work pays off and I am excited that our family is planting roots in the DC area for future generations.
Favorite weekend activity?
My favorite thing to do on the weekend is NOT work! :) I really enjoy those weekends where we have nothing else going on, when my kids climb in the bed with us in the morning and we watch cartoons, I make them a big breakfast, and we leisurely play all day. But more often than not, we have a birthday party or event for the Studio!
Tell us one fun fact or silly story about yourself.
I am silly about 90% of the time :) I love playing pranks on my friends! I once tried to show off at a family reunion by doing a cartwheel in front of everyone. My pants split right up the middle and showed the whole family my backside!
Thanks Manjanique! WOW will be working with The Studio later this month to host a Pilates Class at Redskins Park - Stay tuned for more information.
It's our turn.
