Becoming a marathon runner may seem like a daunting task to many (we can't event imagine running a half-marathon, but that's just us)! Whether you frequent the 5K circuit or prefer racing the treadmill clock instead, there's an inner athlete waiting to be unleashed inside all of us. WOW's contributing personal trainer reveals some tips to help you become a super star in whatever you set out to do!

I want to start off by saying that I attended the WOW Draft Event on Saturday and all I have to say is: The Draft Day Party at Fedex Field was awesome - It was great to see so many people supporting the Redskins! As a fan, and with the addition of Robert Griffin III, I know we are going to have an exciting season. I say we because as a Redskin fan, you count yourself as part of the team (which I'm sure you all do the same). There's no doubt that RGIII will have a long and successful career.
I started to think what makes professional athletes different from the rest of us amateurs. Or are they really that different from you and me?
I know there has to be an inherent natural gift for their sport. Not all of us can become Hall of Fame quarterbacks, prolific hockey players or basketball greats. But there are other characteristics we all have in common, whether we know it or not. We all have the potential to be the superstar in whatever we decide to pursue. That includes fitness endeavors. Here are a few characteristics I thought would apply to everyone no matter what level you train, compete or play in.
Mental Strength - This is one of the most important characteristics of an athlete. Many occasions require your head to be in the game even if you feel you are succeeding or failing. I believe women have incredible mental strength. Childbirth?? Focus on what you are doing at that moment. When strength training and your muscle are exhausted, you manage to pull out a few more reps.
Passion - Every athlete must have the passion towards the sport they play. And a passion to win or succeed. Find a way to stay fit that interests you and one that you enjoy. If you find something you like, you will work harder to succeed. You may not like the gym environment so take your workout outside and go hiking simply because you like it more.
Identify Your Weaknesses - One of the best ways to give your best is to overcome all your drawbacks and learn from the mistakes. So maybe your tennis serve isnt as fast as you want so find ways to increase your strength and perfect your technique.
Practice Makes Perfect - Practice is an integral part of every game. You can only develop a skill by regular practice. So stay consistent with your running training program. It will eventually feel easier to run those 5 miles!
Learn - Another important factor for an athlete is the willingness to learn. Learn all that you can about your sport. Make sure you absorb all the things your personal trainer teaches you so you can apply them when you workout on your own. It will make you better at what you do.
I know at least a few of the traits apply to you. You didnt know you had the potential to be your own Superstar, did you? Find something you love. Learn everything you can about it. Take your mistakes and turn them around. Dont get distracted by the negative. And practice, practice, practice!
Go ahead and give it a try, I know you can do it!
Oh, and welcome RGIII and good luck!!!
