Whether she's taking fans behind-the-scenes on Inside the Redskins, the show she co-hosts with Cornerback DeAngelo Hall, or cheering on the sidelines with the rest of the first ladies of football, Amanda Mitchell is clearly a Redskins girl at heart! WOW sat down with the Redskins Broadcast Network's newest face to talk about her experiences with the Redskins organization, including a recent trip to Afghanistan, and much more in this exclusive WOW interview.
1. Tell us a little bit about yourself and your experience with the Redskins – first as a cheerleader and now an on-air talent. What has the transition been like?
I've been a cheerleader for three years and am currently in my first year as co-captain. The 40 ladies on my team are my best friends, biggest idols and most trusted confidants. I'm blessed to dance beside all these wonderful women.
The transition this year from cheerleader to host of Inside the Redskins and a regular contributor on-air for RBN has been a dream come true. I feel like I've truly become part of the 'Skins family this year and for that I'm very blessed!
2. Tell us about your recent trip to Afghanistan! What were you doing?
I just returned from a 17-day Armed Forces Entertainment tour to the UAE, Kyrgyzstan and Afghanistan. Three of my teammates and I traded in our pom poms for body armor and headed east to spread some Redskins cheer! We met with thousands of soldiers, marines and airmen and learned about the various missions supporting the war in Afghanistan.
The greatest part of our trip was a five-night stay at Camp Leatherneck in the Helmand Province of Afghanistan. From there, we flew in Bell Boeing V-22 Ospreys to the various FOBs in the surrounding areas on day missions. We traveled, danced and signed autographs around the clock, and spent quality time with the heroes that risk their lives every day to keep America safe.
3. You’ve been with the Redskins a long time - what has been your best memory with the team?
One of my favorite memories was flying with our suite owners and front office staff to the 2009 Super Bowl in Miami. Even though the Redskins weren't playing, we brought a fantastic team of fans to invade South Beach and represent the burgundy and gold!
Another fabulous memory was the opening game, Sept. 11, at Fed ExField this season. The patriotism and symbolic nature of that game against the Giants was overwhelming. The entire opening ceremony was flawless and reinforced my pride as a Washingtonian.
4. We know you love football – what other hobbies do you have? What do you like to do in your free time?
I'm a huge fitness buff. I love to work out and push myself athletically. A strong body makes for a strong mind. For me, the key to staying fit is varying my workouts. This challenges different muscles, and keeps me from getting burnt out. A typical week consists of two days of cardio (I love to run outside whenever I can to beat the monotony of a treadmill), one day of plyometrics, cross-training or strength conditioning, one day of yoga, two days of intense dancing or zumba and light calisthenics and finally, one day of rest!
I also love to cook healthy dishes! My absolute favorite dish to cook is Chilean Seabass drizzled with a sweet and spicy soy-honey glaze, served with steamed broccoli and brown rice.
When I find some free time, I love dining out and trying new restaurants. My nickname with friends is "Mapquest" because I always know where I'm going around town. I correlate my directional sense with my shameless addiction to great food all around town! A few of my favorite restaurants are Buddha Bar, Rice, Ray's the Steaks and Sei.
6. Now let’s talk fashion. What’s your game-day style?
My game day style is comfy-chic. Translation: put-together, but always fun and approachable.
7. Any advice for our young female professionals in WOW?
Follow your dreams and take pride in your hard work! Also, surround yourselves with powerful mentors and other like-minded professionals. The world’s most successful women have all achieved great heights through laser-beam focus, a humble attitude and a willingness to help others.
8. Do you support any causes or charities? Why are they important to you?
One of the primary missions of the Redskins Cheerleaders is to be active in the community. I'm involved in numerous charities and causes. My personal favorite is the NFL Play 60 initiative. It marries my love of fitness with the goal of setting a good example for our youth. Children are the leaders of tomorrow and any way I can touch their lives in a positive way is most rewarding!
