Washington Redskins wide receiver Donté Stallworth kicked off the American Heart Association’s annual ‘Recess’ event in Washington, DC on Tuesday, leading over 200 children in warm-ups and educating them on the importance of exercising.
‘Recess’ focuses on fighting childhood obesity using educational activities that teach children how to stay active and lead healthier lives. Held at the Watkins Recreation Center in Southeast DC, children enjoyed various activity stations including:
- ‘Cheer Station’ hosted by the Redskins Cheerleaders
- ‘Pigskin Toss’ hosted by the DC Divas
- ‘Nutrition’ led by Holli Thompson Nutritional Style
- Obstacle course, led by PULSE
- A Zumba station from Zumba Fitness
“Washington, D.C. has one of the highest child obesity rates in the nation,” said Stallworth. “I’m happy that the Redskins are able to help empower children to exercise, make healthier food choices and live longer lives."
The need for educational nutrition programs such as ‘Recess’ has never been more evident - where kids not only learn that exercise can be fun but also about healthy food choices. According to the American Heart Association, virtually one out of every three children and adolescents are overweight or obese and kids from lower income families are more likely to be overweight or obese due to the lack of access to healthy food and recreation facilities. If current trends continue, today’s kids could be the first generation to live shorter lives than their parents.
Presented by Legacy and CareFirst, ‘Recess’ is an event conducted by the American Heart Association with support from the Washington Redskins and GlaxoSmithKline. Twenty children who are exemplary participants in the ‘Recess’ program will be rewarded tickets to the Redskins/Jets game on Dec. 4.
