Redskins Rookie Safety DeJon Gomes with longtime girlfriend Ashley Pulliam
The WOW Interview Series focuses on successful women in business and the wives, girlfriends and moms of the Redskins organization. This week, WOW sat down with Ashley Pulliam, the girlfriend of Redskins safety DeJon (DJ) Gomes, to talk football, fashion, and relocating to DC!
Rookie DeJon Gomes first met girlfriend Ashley Pulliam in 2006 at a concert outside of San Francisco where they both grew up. Five years and an entire college season later, they are now both in DC after DJ was drafted by the Redskins in the fifth round out of Nebraska earlier this year. We sat down with Ashley to talk about relocating to Washington, NFL style, and to give our fans a behind-the-scenes look at these high school sweethearts!
1. What was it like watching DJ play in his first NFL game?
It is so surreal and an amazing experience thus far. We’ve actually dated since high school and I started watching him play in San Francisco where he went to a community college. We met back in 2006 at the Summer Jam, an event the local radio station puts on in the bay area. He was a junior in high school and I was a sophomore, so we’re like the babies of the team! It’s almost been 5 years and we plan to continue to defy the odds! This whole process has been really amazing though, watching him grow mentally and physically (he use to be a lot smaller!). I’m so grateful to be able to continue to watch him play. It’s really an inspiration that he’s made his dream come true.
2. Any favorite Redskins or football memories?
I’m a Redskins fan by default but once I’m a fan I quickly become a committed fan – I’ve even given a few Cowboys fans a hard time already :). Since this is DJ’s first season, the Redskins will forever have a place in my heart. My dad actually played baseball professionally so I grew up a huge baseball fan - there’s nothing like a hot dog from The Giants Stadium in San Francisco, CA.
3. You’re finishing up your degree at Howard University, how has it been exploring DC?
I am new to the area so I get lost constantly, but I stumbled across a great Mexican restaurant, Lauriol Plaza Restaurant, which is near Howard. The nachos were amazing! I love the culture out here and I’m such a tourist, it’s almost embarrassing! Every one crosses the street in the middle of the street traffic and I’m that girl that walks to the crosswalks waits for the light to change – I’m way too used to the suburbs! But the culture and history here is amazing, I’m just ready to explore it all!

4. Describe your personal gameday style.
I’ve been supporting DJ at games for the past five years, so my gameday style has definitely evolved! During his community college games, I typically wore hoodies with his pictures on it or the team’s colors. At Nebraska I wore a lot of the Victoria’s Secret collegiate collection and his jersey, which of course was blinged out. I plan to bling out my Redskins jersey out as well! I like to look cute and comfy and I only wear heels sometimes – I have to be in the mood for them. No matter what, I always have something that has to do with the team, so that means jerseys or something from the NFL collection by Victoria’s Secret, I like to keep it simple. My advice for game day apparel is to wear cute makeup and make sure you’re comfortable, because you have to be ready to yell and cheer loud!
5. Speaking of fashion and getting dressed up – who takes longer to get ready, you or DJ?
DJ teases me ALL the time about how long it takes me to get ready, but I have one simple motto; “Nobody rushed Leonardo De Vinci when he painted the Mona Lisa.” You can’t rush perfection! I take a while to get dressed but in my defense I get it from my mom (and she takes forever to get dressed no matter what). Although, DJ has the bigger closet and actually uses 2 closets, so I can give him a hard time about that and things even out.
6. Do you plan on getting involved with DJ in the DC community?
I absolutely plan on being involved as much as I can! I volunteered at the animal shelter for a few months in Nebraska. I have a huge heart for animals and kids, especially kids with mental disabilities. One of my sisters has a disability so it really hits home and just warms my heart to help.
7. Do you have any pets?
DJ and I actually just got pocket pet’s or they’re also called Sugar Gliders. They are our first pets together so this will be an adventure within itself! They’re so cute; we have a boy Ralph and girl Lauren – DJ loves the brand Ralph Lauren Polo, in case you didn’t catch that from their names!
It's our turn.
