Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall and outside linebacker Ryan Kerrigan joined Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell last week to kick off the Play60 Challenge at Albert Hill Middle School in Richmond, leading 50 students in a series of exercises.
The youth fitness event served as the background for the 2011 launch of the "Redskins Play 60 Challenge" across the entire Commonwealth of Virginia for all sixth, seventh, and eighth-grade students, which encourages youth to be active for 60 minutes every day as a way to combat childhood obesity.
The Redskins Play 60 Challenge, GlaxoSmithKline’s Healthy Communities program, and the Governor’s Health and Wellness initiative will help Virginia students lead more active lives and encourage parents, teachers, neighbors, and friends to help our students meet the challenge!
Redskins Players to Host Recess Tomorrow in Southeast DC
To continue promoting healthy and active lifestyles for children, Washington Redskins players Donté Stallworth and Terrence Austin will lead warm ups and exercises for over 200 kids from Ward 6 tomorrow, kicking off Recess' fourth season. Recess, presented by CareFirst and Legacy, is an event conducted by the American Heart Association with support from DC Parks and Recreation, National Association of Teen Fitness and Exercise, the Washington Redskins and GlaxoSmithKline
According to the American Heart Association, the District of Columbia has some of the highest levels of childhood obesity in the nation. Across the United States, nearly 25 million children and teens are overweight or obese. Virtually one out of every three children and adolescents are overweight or obese making childhood obesity one of our nation’s leading health threats.
